Storms 101: Damaging Winds
5/10/2018 (Permalink)
April's showers are over, so it's time for May flowers... and May storms. Between the cold of winter and the heat of summer, spring is high time for thunderstorms, high winds, and rain. But what causes these storms? In the next few weeks, SERVPRO of Huntington will be covering what causes certain weather patterns.
Damaging Winds
Damaging winds, often called "straight-line winds" to differentiate from tornadoes, are any wind exceeding 50-60 miles per hour. Any wind is caused by air moving from high atmospheric pressures to low ones; this is called a pressure gradient. Damaging winds are caused when a pressure gradient changes quickly over a small distance.
