Storms 101: Rain
5/24/2018 (Permalink)
It's time for the last installment of Storms 101. Did you know that Huntington gets an average of 42 inches of rain a year? That's three inches over the national average! Just how does rain happen, though?
Our atmosphere is made up of small dust particles called condensation nuclei, which are created from things like volcanic eruptions, pollution, fires, and other events. The sun heats up bodies of water like the ocean, and water vapor rises into the air. The condensed water vapor sticks to the condensation nuclei and creates clouds.
When enough water condenses, the droplets get heavy enough to fall back down to the ground. If it's cold enough for the droplets to freeze, that creates snow. If not, it becomes rain and the cycle starts all over again.
